Osteoporosis
How can chiropractors help osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis happens when the amount of calcium in the bones (which gives them strength) is lowered. This is particularly common in women past the menopause.
Sometimes people are told “their bones are crumbling”, this is not the case. The bones do not change shape or have bits crumble off. Osteoporosis does not cause pain. People can be in pain and have osteoporosis, the pain is often due to wear and tear which we may help – Click here for link to Wear & Tear. Osteoporosis does increase the likelihood of a bone fracturing but having osteoporosis doesn’t mean that you will have a fracture.
Falls
Falls are one of the common causes of fractures in osteoporosis. Falls are also common in the age groups associated with osteoporosis. We have a fall prevention programthat assesses if you are at risk of falling and our Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy can improve balance and decrease the risk of falling.
It is important to do weight bearing activities because this increases the calcium levels in bone. However avoid heavy work and lifting especially while reaching above your head.
We can use various modified treatment methods to cater for someone with osteoporosis as well as advise on nutritional changes. Chiropractic helps to keep your joints mobile and improve your balance and muscle tone to minimise the risk of falling.
